Friends in Christ

Paul and I host our church community group every other week. The group is composed of men and women that want to grow in their relationship with Christ. We'll gather together and go through a specific study, e.g. on giving of our time, talents and money for the Lord. Sometimes, we'll get together for a potluck and just hang out.

Two of our friends from our group have been in China for the past 15 months. They are serving there with Food for the Hungry. They plan to be there long term (at least three years). We've all been supporting them, through prayer and with our finances. Well, they were able to come back home this month for a visit. It has been so great to see them again! We so miss them! They are a great couple, very genuine, friendly and generous. Last evening, we had a special group time to visit with them. It was potluck night - YUM! We're also going to have a "girl's night" next week, just some time for all of the ladies to hang out and encourage our friend.

We really appreciate the Biblical community we are in! We're able to encourage one another, serve one another, pray for one another and support one another. It's just like in the early church --
"All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people." (Acts 2:44-47)

Happy Mommy's Day!

I had a good day today. My mom joined us for church this morning. It was a great message from Pastor Scott! Then, we picked up my nephew, Tyler, and came back to our home. I made homemade lasagna (I LOVE the Barilla no boil lasagne noodles!!), asparagus and garlic bread. YUM! Then, we went swimming in our pool. We enjoyed some ice cream cones. More YUM! And then more swimming. I think we calculated that we were outdoors swimming for three hours (there were some breaks in there for lunch and dessert). Whew! We all had a good time. It was great to have my mom over and spend the day with us. Our treat in treating her!!

Happy Mommy's Day to all of you moms out there! Hope your day was blessed too!

Dear Lord...

Usually, Paul tucks in Jared for bed at night and they say their prayers together. Paul has told me that Jared has such sweet prayers. Well, today for nap, as I usually do, I was tucking Jared in when he stopped me and said he wanted to say "Dear Lord..." I said to him "Okay." I started to say "Dear Lord..." when he said "No, no, I say Dear Lord." I said "Oh, okay. You say Dear Lord then." His prayers are so cute, sweet and innocent. His prayer was "Dear Lord, thank you for lunch, thank you for my bath (he took a bath before naptime), thank you for the lotion on the owies on my toes, thank you for Dada, thank you for Mama. Amen!" Awe! I love him so much!

Walking down the aisle

Okay, we (Paul & Maria) aren't walking down the aisle. We did that a while ago ;) Jared is the one that will be walking down the aisle next month...as ring bearer. In one month, the three of us will be traveling to North Dakota for Paul's brother's wedding and Jared has the privilege of being in the wedding as ring bearer. It'll be fun to see Paul's family again and it will be so cute to see our three-year-old all dressed and dapper in a tux! We are excited for Michael and Samara's wedding and look forward to celebrate God's blessing on them!

You've all seen the email jokes. Well, here are a couple...

In honor of the upcoming Arizona summer heat, here are a few Arizona jokes (although, even though some of these might sound like we're joking or kidding, in fact it's true!).

Ode to Arizona
-----------------
The Devil wanted a place on earth.
Sort of a summer home:
A place to spend his vacation
Whenever he wanted to roam.

So he picked out Arizona.
A place both wretched and rough.
Here the climate was to his liking
And the cowboys were hardened and tough.

He dried up the streams in the canyons
and ordered no rain to fall:
He dried up the lakes in the valleys,
Then baked and scorched it all.

Then over his barren desert
He transplanted shrubs from Hell.
The cactus, thistle and prickly pear --
The climate suited them well.

Now, the home was much to his liking.
But animal life, he had none:
So he created crawling creatures
That all mankind would shun.

First he made the rattlesnake.
With its forked poisonous tongue:
Taught it to strike and rattle
And how to swallow its young.

Then he made Scorpions and Lizards
And the ugly old Horned Toad.
He placed spiders of every description
Under rocks by the side of the road.

Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter.
Hotter and hotter still.
Until even the cactus wilted
And the old Horned Toad looked ill.

Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom.
As any creator would:
He chuckled a little up his sleeve
And admitted that it was good.

'Twas summer now and Satan lay
By a prickly pear to rest.
The sweat rolled off his swarthy brow.
So he took off his coat and vest.

"By Golly," he finally panted
"I did my job too well.
I'm going back where I came from
Arizona is hotter than Hell!"

You know you're in Arizona when...
-----------------------------------------
*You no longer associate bridges (or rivers) with water.
*You can say 110 degrees without fainting.
*You eat hot chilies to cool your mouth off.
*You can make instant sun tea.
*You learn that a seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron. (OH YES!)
*The temperature drops below 95, you feel a bit chilly.
*You discover that in July, it takes only 2 fingers to drive your car.
*You discover that you can get a sunburn through your car window.
*You notice the best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance. (YUP!)
*Hot water now comes out of both taps. (THIS IS TOTALLY TRUE!)
*It's noon in July, kids are on summer vacation, and not one person is out on the streets.
*You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
*You break a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m. before work.
*No one would dream of putting vinyl upholstery in a car or not having air conditioning.
*Your biggest bicycle wreck fear is, "What if I get knocked out and end up lying on the pavement and cook to death?"
*You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
