Next, Tour de France

Despite our cold Saturday morning, Jared wanted (and pleaded) to go outside to ride his bike. He is a die-hard biker :) He is SO good at riding around. He knows to bike only in our cul-de-sac. He has a biking path he takes every time...rides to the corner, turns around, rides to his "big bump" (a.k.a. the blue reflector in the middle of the road), perfectly lines up his front bike wheel and rides right over the bump, turns towards the house, gives me a big smile and then does the whole route over again. Sometimes, he will ride up onto the sidewalk and ride on it, to the corner of the road and back.

He is so proud of himself and we are so proud of him. Now, Paul is itchin' to purchase a "big bike" for Jared, a two-wheeler with training wheels. Maybe for his 3rd birthday ;)

There are more pics of Jared riding around at our website, under "Jared" and "The Twos." I also have video of him riding around that I will get up on our website soon.

Jared's motto, "Born to Ride" :)

Oh the weather outside is frightful...

Yes, even in Arizona the weather can be frightful. Okay, maybe not TOO frightful ;) This morning, we woke up to see fog everywhere. We figure visibility was about 1/4 of a mile. Everything was covered in dew from the fog. The temperature was about 35 degrees at 7AM. Brrrr! That's cold for us Natives ;)

Cookie Monster!

Jared helped me bake cookies for Christmas this morning. His first time ever! He was an awesome helper...helping me count out the ingredients, adding the sugars to the bowls and pouring in the chocolate chips. We made two kinds of cookies, big and chewy chocolate chip cookies and Christmas sugar cookies. He also chose his favorite cookie cutters and cut out some of the sugar cookies.

We just decorated the sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles this evening. Jared had fun watching all of the sprinkles come out. Paul and I were able to enjoy some decorating too. Now, if we can just save a few cookies so that we can bring them to Grammy Guzman's Christmas Eve...you know what happens to cookies when the Carlson boys are around ;)

Lions, Tigers and Lights! Oh my!

Last evening we went on a trip to the Phoenix Zoo to see the Zoo Lights. Jared had fun looking at all of the different animal lights. He also got to enjoy a carousel ride and some kettle corn. Yum! Check out more pictures at our website, under "Holidays" and "2006 Christmas."

More Catch Phrases

Here are some more cute phrases Jared likes to say...

- "I'd like some Coke" Well, he's not asking for Coke, the drink, but actually asking for ice. Somehow, he thinks "Coke" is "ice." I tell him "Coke? Or do you mean ice?" Crazy boy.
- "I do it" Yup, the big, independent boy.
- "Momma, talk!" or "Dada, talk!" He says this when we're being quiet and not talking and he wants us to talk with him. Or he says this when he is asking us a question and wants us to reply.
- "Momma, guess what?" I will then ask him "What?" Then, he replies with "What're doing?" I think he's trying to say "Guess what I am doing?" but is breaking up the sentence ;)
- And his favorite phrase lately..."Christmas!" He usually says this when we're looking at outdoor lights or Christmas trees. Oh!, and he loves to then sing "O Christmas Tree" or "Jingle Bells." He usually says to me "Momma, sing O Christmas" or "Momma, sing Jingle Bells." Then, he will sing with me. Awe!

Jared loves to talk

Jared is such a talker! He definitely knows what and how to say things. Some phrases he says a lot...

-- "what is / are the 'fill in the blank' doing?" For example, "what are you doing mommy?" or "what is the boy doing?" or "what is that man doing?" He usually asks what someone is doing. Then, when we say "I don't know. Tell me what he or she is doing." He replies with what that person is doing. So smart!!
-- "it's yummy and tastey," usually a reply when we ask him how something tastes. Too cute!
-- "be careful mama." I guess he picked up this one from me ;)
-- "I'll be right back" and then "bye bye." He likes to say this when he remembers he wants to bring something out to play with or remembers he wants to go grab something to show us. He says it with a very serious face too - HA!

In addition to all of his talking, he LOVES to sing. He can sing through the ABC song. He will ask us to "sing the ABCs" and he gets all of the letters and words. Very smart! He also loves to sing "The B-I-B-L-E," "Oh Happy Day," "Happy Birthday to You" and "Jesus Love Me" songs. Plus, he will make up his own songs, with loud and soft parts of the song too. I think I've sung through the "La La La" song before :)

It is so fun hearing him talk and sing! He is so smart!

Lil' Turkey

We hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, munching down on some turkey and pumpkin pie! We went to California again for Thanksgiving this year. We spent Thanksgiving with Maria's extended family. Jared had fun playing with the other kids and we got to see family we hadn't seen since last year.

Then, we went for a trip through the Long Beach Aquarium the day after. Maria's Cousin, Audrey, was also able to join us. Yay! I think we had a good time. Jared had some fun looking at all of the different fish and animals. You can check out more pictures of our Thanksgiving trip at our website, under "Holidays" and "Thanksgiving."

Now, it's only a month until Christmas. Ack! Where did the time go?? Jared is excited to see the neighbors' outdoor Christmas lights up and lit. We've already had to drive around the neighborhood to look at them all ;) We'll be staying in town for Christmas this year. We look forward to a blessed Christmas!

Boo!

We've been having a good fall so far. It is great having cooler weather. Now, Jared can go outside and play all he wants ;) He rides around on his trike and "mows the lawn" a lot with his bubble mower.

In October, Jared and I took a fun fitness class for kids. He got to play with other kids on trampolines, on mats, with hula hoops, climbing up and down an obstacle course, etc. He enjoyed it! I am already looking at the parks & rec spring semester catalog to see what is available. There's lots to choose from...a kids ceramics class, a class on music, a sports class!

We had a fun and safe Halloween. We almost didn’t go out. Jared came down with the stomach flu / cold :( Praise God that he got much better! He was well enough to go out trick-or-treating for a little bit. This was the first year he was really into it. We’d tell him “okay, now you go up to the door, ring the bell, the door opens and what do you say?” He’d say “trick or treat!” He really enjoyed that! We also hung out in our friend’s driveway, who was handing out candy. Several of the neighborhood ladies "Ooooo"d and "Ahhhh"d over Jared. They thought he was the cutest fighter pilot ever! Needless to say, he went home with a VERY heavy trick-or-treat bag ;) We have a few Halloween pictures on our website, under "Holidays" and "Halloween."

Hope 'yall are having a good fall too!

Digi Scrapbook

Man, it's been a long time since I last blogged :P

Well, the latest thing I've picked up on is digital scrapbooking. I came across a site on it and thought "What? You mean you can scrapbook on your computer?" Yup. The site, which is
http://www.digitalscrapbookplace.com/, is very cool. All you need is Adobe Photoshop (which I already had) and the digital scrapbook parts (which are available at these kind of sites). You can purchase the scrapbook parts but hey, some of these sites provide freebie downloads. Very cool ;) So, I downloaded some scrapbook items and did my first digital scrapbook page. Check it out!

Then the scrapbook page can be printed out and placed into a "hardcopy" scrapbook.

Pretty cool, huh?

"Time flies" or "I've lost track of time"

"Does anyone know what time it is?" or "Does anyone have the time?" We've noticed that Jared is trying to understand time lately. How we figured it out was he kept saying "3 weeks" or "4 weeks." He would say "take a shower in 3 weeks" or "dada home in 4 weeks" "or "dinner in 3 weeks." We just thought it was cute of him saying "3 or 4 weeks" but then we realized that he's trying to understand time. Ah ha! Now we get it! I guess it's TIME to get him a watch or clock - HA! :P

Cuddle up with his quilt

Jared has something new to cuddle up with...a quilt! I've been wanting to make another quilt and so making one for Jared was a good excuse ;) I found a pattern I liked (I did add another row and column to make it bigger) and I went with a fabric that Jared enjoys, fire trucks. Jared has already started to use the quilt, to pull out and lay on for storytime. We're sure this quilt will get much love and use from Jared! You can see more pics of the quilt at our website, under "Jared - Twos" or "Maria - Quilting."

Cooled Off

We had a fun time "cooling off" in Flagstaff, AZ! The weather was perfect. We even had some nice rain while there. We enjoyed having lots of pine trees around us...it was so relaxing sitting outside enjoying the views from the balcony. We both said we'll definitely come back. Maybe we can come back when there's snow!! Jared would enjoy that ;)

See more pics of our trip at our website, under "Trips" and "2006."

Big Boy!

Our little boy, Jared, is getting bigger and bigger these days. He started sleeping in his big bed this week (the bottom bunk). Yay!

He napped in it for three days. Then just last evening and this evening, he asked to sleep in the big bed AT NIGHT. Wow! He is good at sleeping in the bed and not getting out of it until he asks us to get down(no roaming around!). He gives us a big smile and a big high five when we praise him with "Jared! You slept in your big boy bed! WOW!!" He's pretty proud of it ;)

Enjoying the summer

Yes, we have been enjoying our summer. Jared had fun attending two weeks of swim classes back in June. Now, he jumps right into the water, enjoys holding his breath under water and kicks and swims (with supervision, mind you) all over our pool. With all this summer swimming, he has quite the tan now...There are more Jared pics at our website, under "Jared" and "Twos."

We had fun Fourth of July, celebrating with some friends a few days before and then driving to the Chandler fireworks the evening of. It was fun seeing the fireworks but we still miss our ND fireworks :( !!

We are going to head up north in a few weeks to Flagstaff, to get out of the hot and humid days of August. We look forward to that trip. In about 160 miles, we'll be surrounded by big pines and 20 degrees cooler weather. It will be a nice getaway for the three of us!

Hope you are enjoying your summer...keep cool ;) !

Burn, Baby, Burn!

Okay, so we know we live in a desert here in AZ. Yes, it is a dry heat too (unless it is during the monsoon months of July, August and September, then it is hot AND humid). Still...118 degrees today was pretty bad. Although, it was better than the 122 degrees we had back in June of 1990 :)

Keep cool!

Summer time!

Yes, it's summer time! We can really feel the summer heat here in AZ...111 degrees :) Hotter weather means it's swim time too. We've been in our pool a handful of times now. Jared enjoys the pool but on his own terms. He's not too hot to go "swimming" in deeper waters, away from the pool steps. We got him enrolled in a mommy-and-me swim class, where he will learn how to float on his back, kick, blow bubbles, etc. Our first class was this morning and it went okay. I think Jared was more interested in swimming in the play area :)

Jared is doing well and growing faster than ever. He's learning much and wanting to do more stuff by himself, e.g. get into and out of his seat, walk without holding mama's or dada's hand, etc. As always, he keeps talking and talking and talking. We are going through colors, numbers and the ABCs with him. He does great talking through everything. Check out the latest audio of him going through the ABCs, under the "Jared" and "The Twos" links on our website.

Keep cool :)

You betcha :)

Yah, you betcha we had a good time in Minnesota :) We took a two-week vacation there. Paul's sister, Mary, gave birth to a baby girl, Kezia, in March. Plus, Mary and her husband, John, have been building their new house for the last two years. So, we got to see Mary, John and Kezia and their new homestead.

We had a fun time, visiting with family, being at the baptism of Kezia (which we were sponsors of) and helping out Mary and John around the house and with the baby. We saw much wildlife...birds, wild turkeys, deer, racoons, pigs, wildflowers. It was cool seeing all of that! We also took a paddle boat tour up the Mississippi and a farm tour from Mary's sister-in-law, Becky and family. Jared enjoyed playing with his new baby cousin and spent lots of time running around outside on the open range :) Check out pictures of our trip
here.

Easter in the desert

Easter is almost here! Jared and his friends, Grace, Owen and Seth, got to see a Desert Cottontail this morning. Just in time for Easter :) You can check out more pictures of our morning outing under the "trips" or "Jared" links.

We have a packed Easter weekend. We have been invited to hunt for eggs tomorrow morning in the grassy area of our neighborhood. Jared will love that! We'll attend Easter service Sunday morning. Then, we'll see our friends again for Easter dinner and another egg hunt. Fun, fun, fun!!

Have a blessed Easter!

Jared is mowing our yard!

Didn't you know that two-year-olds mow yards? Yup, Jared did great mowing our yard this morning. He didn't cut too low or break off any of the sprinkler heads. He did a good job!

April Fools! Hee hee :) !! Jared was out playing with his bubble mower. Check out more pics under the "Jared" and "The Twos" links on our website.

He's Two!

Jared is now officially a two-year-old! His birthday was yesterday. We had a birthday party for him on Sunday. Our friends, the Murphys, my mom and my nephew, Tyler, came over for the festivities. We had Jared's party themed with "bubbles," as that is what he really likes lately. I made Jared and Grace some Mr. Bubble t-shirts and we had the kids blow bubbles outside. Jared knows how to blow bubbles so he enjoyed that. Those no-spill tumblers really work too! Jared also knows how to blow out the candles on his cupcake. He enjoyed munching on the cupcake and then we opened presents. We think he had a good time celebrating his birthday! You can check out pictures of his birthday under the "Birthday" or "Jared" link.

Firefighter Carlson

Yes, Jared is now a firefighter...or at least a junior firefighter :) We went to the grocery store the other day and a shift of Chandler firefighters were there getting groceries too. They all said "hi" to Jared. One of them ran out to the firetruck just so that he could get a firefighter hat to give to Jared. The firefighter even wrote Jared's name and their engine number on it too, making it "official" :) Jared said "thank you" to them :) Jared loves to look at the firetrucks too.

Next week, Jared turns two! We are having a birthday party for him this weekend. So, come back to the website early next week for pictures of the "big party" :)

Me & My Teddy

Do any of you remember having a favorite stuffed animal when you were little? Or maybe a blanket? I remember playing with my love-a-lot Care Bear. He went with me everywhere when I was little. In fact, I still have him :) Well, Jared's favorite animal right now is his teddy bear. Lately, he gets Teddy out of the bed and sits down with Teddy to read him stories or "feeds him" at the kitchen table. Teddy has also had a few rides with Jared on his rocking horse. It's cute to see Jared play with the bear. He plays with other stuffed animals too but none get as much attention and care as Teddy Bear :)

Buddies

Today, Jared and I got together with our friends, Karen and Grace. Karen and I decided to get together at the mall, to let the kids loose in the play area for a while and then do some shopping. I also threw an impromptu photo shoot into our morning :) We got several pictures of Jared and Grace together, holding hands, hugging or just having fun sitting on some props like a train or airplane. They were too cute! Jared and Grace are fun little friends to each other. Praise God we have the friends he has placed in our lives!

Cutie Pie!

As most of you know, Jared is such a sweetheart! Lately, Paul and I seem to be enjoying Jared lots...his laughs, his "jokes," his talking, his playful heart, his patience with us, his funny smiles, his love for our cat Bear, his joy playing outside and watching all the birds fly around. He is too sweet when he waves "hi" and "bye" to everyone, and I mean EVERYONE :) Folks can tell that he is a personable boy - so friendly and kind. What a cutie pie he is!!

Grandpa's Future Driver :)

Hi Everyone,
It has been a while since we posted on our blog. We are doing well. We are enjoying our cooler winter weather and spending as much time outside as we can...because soon it will be summer again :) We pray that you too are enjoying this milder winter!

Jared is growing into a big toddler! He loves playing with friends and other kids. Currently, he enjoys pushing around the garbage truck Grammy and Grampy Carlson got him last year. Now, he knows the fun of pushing it around :) He'll "dump" the "trash" into the back of the truck and then drive the truck around. He's been pushing it all the way from his room, to the family room and then around and around the coffee table. Grampy has a future garbage truck driver here, ready to help out on the routes in ND :)

Jared is talking lots now. He will say what we say. Some words he says are "kitty," "night night," "mama" (FINALLY! :) ), "help," "on," "off" and much, much more. He even knows what jokes are. So, he will babble something and then laugh. We'll join in on laughing at his jokes too :) He loves to cuddle with our cat, Bear...although Bear might not enjoy the cuddling as much as Jared :) Jared also loves to pray with us. He'll put out his hands to hold hands and pray. He also says "amen" with us. Too cute, I say!

Jared is coming up on his second birthday! We can't believe it is already two years! He is such a blessing to our family!
